Spring in Belgium – Gallery

While it was (for once) right on time, Spring leaves us this year with some sort of a bittersweet taste. It sure has beautiful colours and weather to offer, yet we can’t fully enjoy it.

It’s Spring 2020 and one third of the world population is asked to stay home to help putting an end to a world-spread pandemic.

In normal circumstances, I would have talked to you about the Hallerbos (i.e. the Halle forest) and the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken. I would also have written about spending a day in Lier or Bruges. Personally, I would probably have gone to Leuven, Mechelen, Ghent or Antwerp.

Yet, I decided to share with you a little sweetness from home. I prepared a photo gallery illustrating what Spring can look like in Belgium, but most of all in my own neighbourhood. In Belgium, we’re still allowed to go out on and off for practicing sports or walking. It is recommended though to avoid doing so too often.

I took all of these pictures around the block. I wanted to share them with you to show you that you don’t need to go far to find and observe beautiful things. There are a lot to enjoy right before our eyes, especially during this season!

This bouquet aims to cheer you up and show you how beautiful Belgium can be. Spring is a beautiful time of the year, and if you try to take a closer look at it and take the time to unveil its hidden secrets, you might really enjoy it – even if only from your garden !

Spring in the park

For me, Spring is the most beautiful season of all! It needs no sparkles to shine bright. Spring is sweet, full of colours and fresh air. It’s the best time to enjoy great walks, observe the rebirth of nature, see sleeping animals waking up, and breathe thousands of delicate scents. It is everywhere and, if you dare to look for it, you’ll even find it in your city or village.

I took these pictures in the Belgian city I live in. There’s a beautiful park with magnolias close to my house. Every year, before turning green and being covered with leaves, they put on a splendid cape made out of pink petals.

Spring in the garden

We’re lucky enough to enjoy a small exterior space in the city. Our house has a small garden which we decorated with flowers over the years. I remember what we were told when we moved in: “nothing grows in the ground here”. A few years later, weeds were replaced with beautiful flower beds made out of roses, hydrangeas, box trees, a passiflora, a wisteria, an hellebore, lilies of the valley, wild orchids, fruit trees and, of course, the stars of the Spring season in my garden: forget-me-nots and violets.

Just for the anecdote, when we moved in, the garden was wilderness. A pot, seemingly full of ground and without flowers, was standing all alone in the middle of the chaos. But a few days later … surprise! The same pot was filled with these little blue flowers which the garden is now full of!

You can find such small seeds of happiness everywhere if you take the time to look for them.

Spring in the woods…

In the woods too, nature did not wait for the end of the lockdown to burst into colours and fill the air with delicate scents. Wild hyacinths are also flowering.

Because I don’t want to seem to invite you to go out now and see it for yourself, I’m not going to reveal where this place is. One thing I can tell you though is that this is not the Hallerbos.

… and in fields

As simple as can be… the fields! If you live in a rural area, you’ll most probably find a lot of them in your surroundings. This one is really close to my house. If you don’t have a garden or if there are no woods or parks near you, why not enjoying, for once, a walk in the fields, especially if they’re full of flowers, like this one?
